What devices are supported on W&L's secure wireless network? (link) |
The wireless network for W&L faculty, staff and students uses a technology called 802.1x, which provides security by encrypting all network traffic.
Some older computers do not support this technology. However, most modern, up-to-date wireless devices will run on the secure wireless network:
- Windows computers with security features enabled, including auto-updates, firewall and up-to-date operating system
- Macintosh computers with security features enabled, include firewall and up-to-date operating system
- Apple iPad and iPod Touch
- Most Smart Phones with wireless capability, including iPhone, Blackberry, and Android-type phones
Game devices such as the Xbox 360 and Wii and other special-purpose network devices such as the Roku do not function on the secure wireless network. For such devices, use a wired connection, or register them for use on the wireless network.
Please note that wireless is a limited resource, and that minor disruptions are common; see Statement on Wireless Service at W&L

What is 802.1x? (link) |
802.1x is a network protocol that provides an authentication mechanism to devices connecting to a wired or wireless network. Washington and Lee employs 802.1x on its wireless network, "WLUsec." An additional level of security is provided by encrypting all traffic on the wireless network.
Devices must be configured in order to function properly on an 802.1x network; at W&L, wireless devices may be configured by connecting to the Web page at http://wireless.wlu.edu and following the steps as prompted. |

Why do I always have to log in to the wireless network? How do I get onto the secure wireless network? (link) |
The WLU wireless network allows users to access the network for a short period with authenticated access, or a long period with secure access. If you are just visiting campus for a day you should attach to the "wlu" wireless networks. If you are going to be using our wireless network frequently you will want to register for the secure wireless network. Registering on the secure network allows you to remain attached to the network without having to reauthenticate, and it encyrpts your network traffic so it is secure. To register on the Secure network go to Http://wireless.wlu.edu .
If you are not formally associated with WLU you can access the network as a guest by attaching to the "wlu" network. This network has some restrictions. Applies To: Faculty, Staff, Students |

How do I get my laptop computer to display on the projector? (link) |
Most laptop computers require you to turn on the external monitor output in order to send the computer image to the projector. Follow these steps for WINDOWS based laptops: -Be sure you have a proper cable connected from your laptop's external monitor port directly to the projector or to the classroom podium connectors. -Press and hold the Fn key on your keyboard (usually located in the lower left). -Press the specific key for your laptop (F1-F12) that controls your external monitor port. The key is usually indicated by an external monitor icon or the words "CRT/LCD". For example, on a Dell laptop the proper keystroke combination is Fn+F8. Other brands may use Fn+F5, Fn+F7 or another combination. Check your owner's manual if you are unsure. -Repeat the keystroke combination if the laptop does not project after the first attempt.
ForMAC laptops: -An adaptor cable is usually necessary to connect a MAC laptop to one of the classroom systems or directly to a projector. There are several different styles that are model dependent. This cable normally comes with your laptop. See your owner's manual for more details. -Hook the adaptor cable directly to the projector or to the classroom podium connectors. -It is best to turn on your MAC laptop after making the proper cable connections. The laptop will see the external monitor and set itself up to send an image to it. |

I spilled something on my laptop what should I do (WHD)? (link) |
First turn your computer off, unplug it from the power source and take out the battery.
Second, lay the computer on a paper towel in a manner in which the liquid will drain out.
Third, take out as many components as you can (keyboard, harddrive, Dvd/CD and memory usually) and towel these parts off and leave everything to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
Forth, Check your warranty. Your computer will probably only be covered by the warranty if it has accidential coverage. If you do not have a copy of your warranty at hand you can call your computers manufacturer. They will be able to look up the warrenty information using your computers service tag.
If you have killed the motherboard of your computer with liquid, the hard drive is usually still okay. Take it to the Information Desk to see if any data can be retrieved. |

Why are some files unavailable in my personal web site? (link) |
If you right click on the files that do not work and look at the Security tab under Properties, the read permissions for the WWW user are missing. This is the account that the web servers use to read the data. Missing rights is usually caused by moving files between folders of differing security settings. Within a volume, the file server does not recalculate rights on a move. These files may have been dragged from elsewhere in the H: drive, and therefore did not receive the read permissions required. The easiest way to prevent this is to use copy/paste instead of drag or move, since rights are always re-calculated when a file is created.
To fix the existing files:
1. right click on the public_html folder
2. select properties
3. select security
4. select advanced
5. check the box “Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects”
6. select OK
7. select OK
This will force all the rights in the public_html folder to be recalculated. |

Can I get an exported list of all contacts at W&L that I can import into my personal address book in another mail client (Thunderbird, Gmail, etc.)? (link) |
We do not provide copies of the address list for two primary reasons. 1 - it becomes a nightmare to troubleshoot issues as more and more out-of-date address lists are in use, 2 - if a machine holding these addresses gets infected with a virus that uses or collects addresses then our whole address list would be compromised. |
