Can I get an exported list of all contacts at W&L that I can import into my personal address book in another mail client (Thunderbird, Gmail, etc.)? (link)

We do not provide copies of the address list for two primary reasons. 1 - it becomes a nightmare to troubleshoot issues as more and more out-of-date address lists are in use, 2 - if a machine holding these addresses gets infected with a virus that uses or collects addresses then our whole address list would be compromised.

Is email secure? (link)

It all depends on what you’re trying to protect against. So, the simplest answer is 'no'! Email is not secure, unless you have taken extra steps to encrypt the message or the attachments (or both). Therefore, do not put confidential information (i.e., SSN, credit card number, etc.) in any email, unless you know it is encrypted. Briefly, access to your email account is secured by your username and password, so make sure you have a strong password. Email can be secured from network “snooping” by accessing it from a web page using Secure Socket Layers (SSL) – indicated by the “S” in HTTPS. If you access your email from your phone, then security depends on that device. These are just some of the variables/examples, and for more information please contact the Information Security Officer.

Removing the “Sent from My iPhone” Signature

This is actually the same on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, though we’ll focus on the iPhone for obvious reasons:

  • Tap on the “Settings” app
  • Tap on “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”
  • Scroll down a ways and then tap on “Signature”
  • Tap “Clear”, or just select all the text and delete it manually

Now exit from Settings. Any time a new mail message has been composed, sent, or replied to, the iPhone will no longer attach the “Sent from my iPhone” message with any emails.

How can I tell if an email is a phishing scam (security)? (link)

Look at examples of e-mail received by W&L community members, and see if you can tell the difference between legitimate e-mail and "phishing" attempts in this interactive quiz: http://www.wlu.edu/x31191.xml

Phishing is the fraudulent use of e-mail to extract confidential information. Often such messages appear to come from legitimate sources such as your bank, or W&L, and ask for information such as account information and passwords. Information Technology Services will never ask you to divulge your W&L password.

Beware of any e-mail purporting to be from Information Technology Services asking for your W&L password. Any such e-mail is “phishing”: an attempt to steal personal information. ITS staff will never ask you for your password, via email, phone, or any other means. Remember, your password is your secret.

Never respond to e-mails asking for your W&L password or other personal information, such as bank account or social security numbers. Instead, please follow the procedures to report it to our spam filtering vendor, and then delete the email.

Please protect yourself:

    * If you disclosed your W&L password in response to a phishing email, change your password immediately at http://password.wlu.edu

    * Never disclose your password to anyone.

* Your W&L password should not be used for any service outside the University.

Why am I getting an error message when importing video from Flip Camera? (link)

There is a problem running the latest version of FlipShare (the software that manages all your Flip videos) on older PCs. Basically, the software detects the processor on your computer and if your processor is not up to its standard, it will shut down, giving you an error message.

The solution is to download and install the older version of Flipshare. First uninstall Flipshare (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs), then download and install "Flip Video For PC" v3.7 from here:

How do I save a file from email to the iPad dropbox (using the Dropbox app and the iAnnotate app?) (link)

How to Save a File from Email to the Dropbox with iAnnotate

1. On your PC or Macintosh desktop computer, download the Dropbox program from www.dropbox.com

a. As part of the installation process, Dropbox will create a file in your "My Documents" folder. Anything that you save to that folder will viewable from your iPad.

2. Create a Dropbox account for yourself; remember the password because you'll have to enter it every time you access the account from your iPad. It can be the same or different from your University password.

a. You should now have a Dropbox account with 2 GB of free storage.

b. Drag a file into that folder for testing purposes.

3. Download the Dropbox application on your iPad.

a. Log into the dropbox once it's installed.

b. You should see the file you dragged to the Dropbox.

4. You can upload any photos or video files from your iPad to your Dropbox, but not any documents or PDFs. This is where iAnnotate comes in...it communicates between your email and your dropbox, being the 3rd party.

5. Download the iAnnotate application on your iPad.

6. You should now be able to send a PDF from email to iAnnotate, and from iAnnotate to the Dropbox, all from the iPad.

When user logs in to check their quarantine queue, they are unable to select a message. The error they receive is that the message does not exist in their queue and they are logged in as the wrong user. The error message suggests they log out and login again, but the problem remains. (link)

From:  DigiTar Support

This is usually caused by the following situation:

1.) The user is logged in as
a@b.com.
2.) In the user's inbox there are two digests, one for
a@b.com and one for c@b.com.
3.) The user is clicking on a message in the
c@b.com digest in their inbox which tries to link them into the Portal directly to that message.
4.) However, since they are logged in as
a@b.com, they have no rights to the message.

To remedy the situation they need to examine the subject line of the digest they are clicking on, and log into the Portal as the user specified in the subject of the digest.

Why do authenticated forms embedded in unauthenticated web pages display a 401 Access Denied error using Firefox 40? (link)

Version 40 of Firefox intentionally disables authenticated content embedded in unauthenticated web pages if the page and content are in different domains.

This can be manually fixed by:

  • typing “about:config” in the address bar
  • clicking “I’ll be careful, I promise!”
  • searching for the Preference Name:  network.auth.allow-subresource-auth
  • Click the “1” next to that in the Value column and change to “2”
  • click OK.

Once you refresh the page it will prompt for login.

How does an administrative assistant access and use Datatel to find course and student information in order to support their department and its faculty members? (link)

If you need access to Colleague, please go to https://managementtools.wlu.edu/AccessRequest/ and request an account. Once the proper approvals are granted, an account will be set up for you. Accounts are set up on an individual basis and they should not be shared with anyone. If you already have access to Colleague but cannot remember your login information or have issues accessing the system, go to http://webhelpdesk.wlu.edu and create a ticket under the category of Administrative Data – Colleague Issues/Requests. I'm getting the error "The maximum number of cookie values has been reached" when I am logged into WebAdvisor. The same issue will happen with Student workflows, Web Time Entry Workflows, etc. (link)

This error may have been caused by opening four or more WebAdvisor hyperlink windows. For example, if a user is reviewing their budget and clicks on the Actuals, which opens a new window, then clicks on a Voucher, which opens a new window;  and the user does not close any of the child windows, and attempts to select another Actual, they will get the error.

All child windows must be closed using the CLOSE WINDOW button. If the user uses the browser's red X to close the windows, they will still get the error and be forced to log out and back in to WebAdvisor.

If this does not solve the problem you may need to review and then delete the webadvisor stored cookies.

In Chrome - Chrome Settings/Advanced/Content Settings/All Cookies &Site Data/Search "WebAdvisor"/ and Click X to to right of webadvisor.wlu.edu cookie to delete it
