Assuming you're talking about the region for the DVD device, it's a difficult question to answer. The only real way to set it is to insert a disc into the optical drive and wait for the regional interface to appear, and then select your region. I do believe, however, that the region can only be changed so many times before it becomes locked in place. Alternatively, you can download a piece of software known as VLC Media Player, which ignores the region protocol and will allow you to play media from any region so long as you have it set to the default media player instead of Apple's DVD Player.

Tips to speedup a your Mac computer

The best way to speedup sluggish Mac computer is to rebuild it.   Wipe the hard drive and reinstall the programs and your data.  It's just like rebuilding a car engine, but like a car, that may involve a lot of work.  If you have a full backup using TimeMachine you can wipe the hard drive, reload the Snow Leopard OS and then restore everything back to the same setup with TimeMachine and the program 'Migrate' found in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder.  

There are simpler ways to cleanup your Mac, though not as effective.   You can run some simple maintenance programs.  The simplest is actually built into the Mac already.  One for the OS and one for MS Office.

For MS Office, follow this path:

Hard drive > Applications > MicroSoft Office 2011 > Office > Microsoft Database Utility.app

Select the "repair data base" option and run the utility.   It is the first fix to help clear up any issues you maybe having with MS Office.

Next is 'Drive Utility' - located on this path;

Hard drive > Applications > Utilities > "Drive Utility"  after opening, select the hard drive in the left column and "Repair Disk Permissions".   If you boot from an original DVD, you can also "Repair Disk".

The next step to cleanup a Mac, is to dump caches that slow up systems and browsers.  It can be done manually if you know where to find all the caches, but it's better if you use a good Utility program.  These programs do not come with the Mac and must be bought separately.   One of the best, and it's free, is ONYX.   Check the link below and download the one for your system.

The last way to clean things up is to do the defrag like you mentioned. It's not built into the Mac because Apple says you don't need it.  The Mac OS is designed to keep things defragged automatically.  I have run it on some very fragmented machines and have found it to help with varying success.  Several programs will defrag a Mac.  The one is use is called iDefrag, (www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php  -$60).

If you really want to speed up your Mac, new hardware is one of the best options but obvious cost bigger bucks.   Max out the Ram memory to 4GB or better if your computer will hold it.   The upgrade that really improves the speed the most, is replacing older hard drives with the new Solid State hard drives.  They are all digital with no moving parts and make the laptop run unto 4 times faster.  The big draw back is that they are expensive and so we are only buying small sizes ones for now.   The biggest one we are using now is 120GB and they go for about $200.   But that price should go down with time.

Keep holding down the mouse pad while doing a hard restart on the system.  This will eject the disc.

Your are probably having this problem because your Mac is trying to use an old 802.1x setting. To delete these old settings follow these instructions.

1. Click on your Apple icon, and go to System Preferences.
2. In system Preferences click on the Network icon.
3. Choose the AirPort in the left hand window, and click on the Advanced button in the lower right hand side of the Network window.
4. In the Advanced window click on the 802.1X tab. At this point you will need to delete the existing user profiles. Click on any that exist in the left hand screen and click on the - (minus) sign beneith them.
5. Click OK, and connect to WLU and rerun the the Cloudpath installer.

A shared mailboxes can be accessed via OWA.

To open the shared mailbox, simply add the mailbox email address to the end of your normal OWA URL. Authenticate using your normal domain credentials. (https://owa.wlu.edu/owa/mailboxname@ad.wlu.edu)

This error occurs sometimes when using Firefox or Safari to access your Outlook Live account. Here's how to fix the problem:

In Firefox, go to tools, options, then click the privacy tab and click "remove individual cookies".  Then search for outlook and delete all OUTLOOK.COM cookies.  It should now work.  This method may vary in different browsers and versions of firefox.

In Safari, go Preferences/Security/Show Cookies and delete all OUTLOOK.COM cookies.

*Do NOTdelete ALL Cookies - just the outlook.com ones!*

The conference phone can be checked out by students and staff from the Information desk.  The student check out is 4 hours.  The staff check out is 24 hours.

A Conference Calls allow up to eight parties in a conversation.

To set up a conference call:

1. Get the first party on the line

2. Press the FLASH button (The FLASH button just puts the first party on a soft hold.On the Soundstation2 conference phone, use the button with the 3 people icon on it)

3. Dial next extension number or key in 9 and dial an outside number

4. Inform the called party that this is a conference call

5. Press the CONF button or Key in FLASH * 4 to connect all parties.

6. If you have more participants, repeat steps 2,3 and 5 until you have reached all parties.

To Reconnect to the conference if a called party refuses the conference, is busy, or does not answer:
Press CONNECT (Phone) button
To Drop Last Party You Added to the Conference
Press FLASH
Press * * 4

A conference call allows up to eight parties in a conversation.

Currently you plug the phone both phone and power cord into the wall.

You plug the phone cord and the power into the center of the table.  Use the adaptor for the power cord.

You plug the phone cord and power into the wall jack located behind the podium.

Macintosh users should always use the (Mozilla) Firefox browser when working in Sakai.

Install the correct Driver:

Before you can install the printer you will need to download and install the appropriate driver for your Operating System.   Click on the link for your operating system below to start the download.  (to find your Operating System click on the Apple and choose “About this Mac”)

Delete all MPS3 network printers:

Open System Preferences and select the Print & Scan Icon, and then delete all MPS3 printers.

Install the new printer:

  In the Print & Scan Preference Panel:

·         Click on the + to add a printer, and choose “Add other printer or Scanner”.

·         In Default, scroll down to select the name of the printer starting with MPS4.

·         Each BizHub has a print queue (see example below)

o   MPS4-ITS_Tucker_BizHub

·         The Name and Location will be automatically populated.

·         Click on pull down “Choose a Driver or Printer Model”

o   In the Filter box, type Konica

o   If the drivers have been installed, you will see a list

The user still had the document that was attached to the e-mail open.  When the original document was closed the e-mail message was sent.

Here’s a couple of advanced troubleshooting tips:

1. Make sure you run Cloudpath from Safari or Firefox. Cloudpath does not work correctly with Google Chrome.
2. Go to the Apple > System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > Airport and remove “WLUsec” and “WLU”.
3. Go to the Apple > System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > 802.1x > User Profiles > “-” key will delete “WLUsec profile.”
4. Select “Ok”
5. Select “Apply”
6. Select “Turn Airport Off” for about a minute. This is the equivalent of starting over.
7. Select “Turn Airport On”
8. Choose the “WLU” wireless network
9. Log in to the portal and re-run Cloudpath from wireless.wlu.edu

PowerFAIDS is a software product developed by The College Board that provides critical functionality regarding financial aid management.  The Financial Aid Department utilizes the PowerFAIDS product to assign and manage awards for students each term.  

Data collected in PowerFAIDS is fed to Datatel Colleague in order to reflect awards and pending aid on student billing.

Only Financial Aid staff have access to the PowerFAIDS product.

Please contact your ITS Client Services Support Specialist for licensing information on other software products. ITS can often provide licensed installations at no charge to the department or provide significant volume discounts for certain products.

Document Connection is part of Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 2 for the Macintosh. It makes it easier for Macintosh users to work with document libraries in SharePoint.

If you are getting a pop up window that Symantec is out of date either:

1. Click on the upright Yellow Shield in your task bar.

2. When the Symantec Window pops up click Live Update on the Left.

If you can't find the yellow shield

1. Click on Start > All Programs > Symantec Endpoint Protection

2. Click on Live Update on the Left.

Syamtec will now run Live Update, you can safely ignore both windows until it has finished.

Unfortunately, no. It cannot be pre-installed in the lab environment.

That said, you may certainly use Box Edit. Box Edit will prompt you to install it any time you log into a computer, log in to your Box account, and then attempt to edit a file.

1. Plug a USB camera into USB port of computer. Logitech USB webcams are available for checkout at the Information Desk in Leyburn Library.

2. Open Skype and log in.

3. In Skype, go to Tools > Options > Audio Settings and choose the Logitech microphone for the audio.

4. In Skype, go to Tools > Options > Video Settings and choose the Logitech camera for the video. (The resident camera does not work with Skype; Skype requires a USB camera, so it can't get the signal from the Dazzle camera.)

5. Add a contact-enter the Skype name, full name or email address of the party you want to call and click find.

6. Click on Video Call to call the person.

7. If multiple people will be sitting in on the Skype interview/video call, you may want to check out the Polycom Conference phone from the Information Desk for better audio.

• Submissions for printing will be accepted from CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, flash/thumb/USB drive, and Sakai.
  To upload an poster to Sakai: (1) Login (2) Go to "My Workspace" (3) Select "Membership" (3) Select "Poster Printing Drop Box" (4) Go to the folder with your name and click "Add" and "Upload Files."
• The following file formats will be accepted: jpg, tiff, or PDF, as well as, images from the following software programs: Adobe Photoshop, MS Publisher, MS PowerPoint, or Adobe Acrobat.
• Clients are encouraged to speak with University Library and/or ITS Staff prior to printing for training in preparing items. Contact Elizabeth Anne Teaff to schedule an appointment to setup a time to meet with one of our staff members.

Stata is a combination of the words statistics and data.

SPSS was originally an acronym for Statistical Package of the Social Sciences.  Later it just became the name of the software. 

• The University Library has two large format scanners: one scanner for delicate and fragile items and one for maps and other large documents.
• To use either scanner, items must be larger than 8½” x 11”. Small items may be scanned using one of the many available campus scanners. The Leyburn Library has several scanning stations on the Main Floor. Campus photocopy machines may also be used for scanning.
• Items to be scanned may be dropped off at the Information Desk of the Leyburn at any time. We will have a turnaround time of 2 business days.
• Scanned images will be saved to CD/DVD, clients’ flash/thumb/USB drive, or the web. The University Library has flash drives that may be checked out for a period of 24 hours and used to transport images.

• In cases of large, on going scanning projects fee may be assessed at a rate of $8.00 per hour. Cash, check, and/or General Debit will be accepted. Departmental Charges will be billed to the appropriate University account.

Statistical software packages are like Excel on steroids.While Excel is a very powerful tool, you wouldn’t use it to compute your income taxes if you had a complicated return.  You would use specialized tax software.  If you want to perform the types of statistical analysis that can be found in academic journals than software like Stata or SPSS would probably be helpful.  Analyses such as crosstabs, correlations, OLS regressions, logistic regressions, etc. can be done in Excel but are easier in Stata or SPSS.  Other types of analyses just can’t be done in Excel.  Stata and SPSS can also handle much larger data files than Excel.

Stata and SPSS also have excellent data management capabilities that facilitate combining data from different sources.In that sense, they can be thought of as low end database software with extremely strong statistical capabilities.

1. Log into PC;
2. Plug in camera to USB port;
3. Open "My Computer";
4. Click on "USB Video Device";
   A window will appear showing what the camera sees.
   Notice that when the camera is recording, a red ring lights up on the camera.
5. To stop recording: close video window.

Mac Installation:

1. Log into Mac;
2. Plug in camera to USB port.

Edit Web Camera Files (Mac only):

1. Once the camera has appeared in Finder, locate the folder named DCIM;
2. Under DCIM is the Video folder;
3. Copy the folder or video files that you want onto your H:\ drive;
4. Start up iMovie;
5. Go to File: Import Movies and choose the folder or movies you want to import;
6. Right click on the file and select Play Full Screen.

Log into Atomic Learning and type in the product such as Adobe Illustrator. Check the newer version number and then look for the “What’s New? Training" and it will give you an overview class of the updates.

Additionally when you "Expand all" in you class you will see some topics with red italicized "New to product name"

The IP address of this device will vary based on the location where it is being used. If you need to know the IP address before the time of your conference, the unit will need to be connected to the network in your location prior to the time of your event. An IP address will be automatically assigned and displayed on the screen. You will then need to leave the device hooked to the network to retain that address.

• There will be a 48 hour turnaround for these services. Printing and scanning will take place Monday through Friday during the academic year.

To install anti-virus software on your computer you must first uninstall any other antivirus software you might have before installing ours. Then click on the link Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7/Vista/XP and install using Internet Explorer.

Audacity is a free, open source software for recording and editing sounds available at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/   The download works on both Macintosh and PCs.

Stata and SPSS are statistical packages that can be found on computers in labs across the W&L campus.  Stata is available in the Williams School and in Leyburn Library.  SPSS is also in the library and on machines in the Science Center. 

You can use the Chat 150 Microphone in the library or in your office. Anywhere you have a connection to a computer.

6. In the Select Users search field; enter the name of the shared mailbox and then click then click Find.
7. Highlight the mailbox name then click OK and OK to close all previous windows.
8. You will now have a permanent link to the shared mailbox in your mail folder hierarchy.

Box will not run on Mac 10.6.8. Apple dropped support of Mac 10.6.8 in February 2014, and since it's not being updated with security updates, Box has dropped their support of the operating system. 

FireFox version 30.0 breaks Windows authentication.  Look for the resource document to the right for the fix.
