When user logs in to check their quarantine queue, they are unable to select a message. The error they receive is that the message does not exist in their queue and they are logged in as the wrong user. The error message suggests they log out
and login again, but the problem remains. (link) |
From: DigiTar Support
This is usually caused by the following situation:
1.) The user is logged in as a@b.com. 2.) In the user's inbox there are two digests, one for a@b.com and one for c@b.com. 3.) The user is clicking on a message in the c@b.com digest in their inbox which tries to link them into the Portal directly to that message. 4.) However, since they are logged in as a@b.com, they have no rights to the message.
To remedy the situation they need to examine the subject line of the digest they are clicking on, and log into the Portal as the user specified in the subject of the digest. |

Why can't I log on to a W&L authenticated web application? (link) |
Here are some of the most common symptoms and solutions to authentication failure to W&L web applications:
- You are repeatedly presented with a login prompt, which never is successful. You are using a personal computer, or are off campus. Try entering your user name with the prefix "AD\" . E.g. AD\MyAccountName . W&L's Active Directory domain is named "AD". This prefix tells the web server which domain to authenticate against.
- The previous step does not work, but in the popup, you see an option similar to "Use Another Account". Select that option, and use the AD\ prefix. In this case, your browser is using your computer's name as the authentication domain, and is ignoring the AD\ prefix.
- Has your W&L password expired? Has it been more that one year since you changed it? You may do so at http://password.wlu.edu.
- You are using FireFox version 30.0 on a Mac or Linux workstation. Release 30 breaks Windows authentication. See the following for a fix: http://managementtools.wlu.edu/Help/Resources/1/271.pdf
- You are using FireFox version 40, and accessing an unauthenticated page with authenticated content embedded in it. This version of FireFox intentionally disables this if the page and content are in different domains. You can configure Firefox to allow this, or use a different browser.
- You are using Safari, and receiving the error "request body stream exhausted". This is a bug with Safari authentication. Use a different browser.
- You are on an iOS device, recently updated to version 7. This update breaks windows authentication for some iOS devices like iPhones or iPads. Use another device.
- You are never presented with a login prompt. You are using Internet Explorer on a W&L computer, from off campus. Integrated Windows login is failing because the browser can not communicate with a W&L AD Domain Controller from off campus. Use another browser or temporarily disable Integrated Windows authentication: https://managementtools.wlu.edu/Help/Default.aspx?col=1&q=unable+log+login
If none of these solutions work, try going to http://MyVI.wlu.edu and opening a web browser from the APPS screen. Then, you will effectively be using a W&L computer, and on campus. This will bypass many issues associated with using personally owned computers. |

When off campus, why can't I log into a W&L application web site (like SharePoint) using Internet Explorer? (link) |
If one takes a W&L laptop that is in the W&L AD domain off campus and then attaches to a site that is in the IE 'Local Intranet' security zone, the laptop attempts to do pass-through integrated windows login. However, this requires that the computer has direct access to an AD domain controller, which is blocked in the firewall. Unfortunately, IE does not gracefully fall back to a username and password prompt in this case.
To configure IE to always prompt for a username and password:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Select “Tools”
3. Select “Internet Options”
4. Select “Security”
5. Select “Local intranet”
6. Select “Custom level…”
7. Scroll all the way to the last option and select “Prompt for user name and password”
8. Select “OK” to exit both dialog windows
To re-configure IE once you are back on campus, follow the same procedure, but in step 7, select “Automatic logon only in Intranet zone” |

There is a problem running the latest version of FlipShare (the software that manages all your Flip videos) on older PCs. Basically, the software detects the processor on your computer and if your processor is not up to its standard, it will shut down, giving you an error message.
The solution is to download and install the older version of Flipshare. First uninstall Flipshare (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs), then download and install "Flip Video For PC" v3.7 from here:

Why do I always have to log in to the wireless network? How do I get onto the secure wireless network? (link) |
The WLU wireless network allows users to access the network for a short period with authenticated access, or a long period with secure access. If you are just visiting campus for a day you should attach to the "wlu" wireless networks. If you are going to be using our wireless network frequently you will want to register for the secure wireless network. Registering on the secure network allows you to remain attached to the network without having to reauthenticate, and it encyrpts your network traffic so it is secure. Why do I get the message "Outlook is trying to retrieve data . . ." (link) |
Issue:
Occasionally Outlook will freeze and a message will pop up stating "Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft Exchange server MEXMBA.ad.wlu.edu."
Reason:
This is most often caused by there being an overly large number of items in the folder of which Outlook is attempting to display the contents. Outlook must perform several operations against the Exchange server to retrieve the contents of a folder. Therefore, when there are many items in a folder, additional processing is required to respond to the Outlook requests.
Solution:
You can help avoid poor performance in Outlook by carefully managing the number of items in folders, especially the Outlook folders that are heavily used (such as the Inbox, Calendar, Tasks, and Sent Items folders).
For the best performance of Outlook, we recommend that you not exceed 5,000 items in any one folder.
Additional Information:
Operations that depend on the number of items in the folder include adding a new column to the view, sorting on a new column, finds and searches. Additionally, the complexity of the requested action will have an impact. For example, marking all items in a folder as Read will take much longer than marking one item. Other actions that may take a long time include retrieving free-busy information for lots of users on a meeting request, or performing a search across multiple folders. If you are frequently performing complex actions, or have high use of the Contacts and Calendar folders, the probability that you will experience decreased performance because of high item counts is greatly increased. What do I do if Outlook no longer suggests (autocomplete) names when I type in an address field? (link) |
Background:
AutoComplete is a feature which displays suggestions for names and email addresses as you begin to type them. These suggestions are possible matches from a list of names and email addresses that you have typed before, known as the AutoComplete name list. The AutoCompletes name list saved as a file on the local machine.
Possible solutions:
-
Are you using your primary machine? AutoComplete Lists are saved per machine (locally). If you are not on your primary machine you will have a different list.
-
Was your machine rebuilt recently? If so your AutoComplete file may not have been copied over to the new build. In this case you will need to start building a new list.
-
Is AutoComplete turned off? To turn AutoComplete on:
-
go to the File menu
-
click Options
-
select the Mail tab
-
scroll down to 'Send messages' section
-
check the "Use Auto-Complete to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc, and Bcc lines" check box
-
Very rarely a AutoComplete list file gets corrupted and all suggestions disappear. If your new entries are being saved then continue to build your new list with use. If the list remains blank contact the W&L InfoDesk.

I have an Error 0x8004920a when trying to access mail.wlu.edu through FireFox or Safari. (link) |
This error occurs sometimes when using Firefox or Safari to access your Outlook Live account. Here's how to fix the problem:
In Firefox, go to tools, options, then click the privacy tab and click "remove individual cookies". Then search for outlook and delete all OUTLOOK.COM cookies. It should now work. This method may vary in different browsers and versions of firefox.
In Safari, go Preferences/Security/Show Cookies and delete all OUTLOOK.COM cookies.

I added a student, faculty or staff member to my Sakai site, but when she/he logs in, the site is not there. Why is that? (link) |
When you add a W&L student, faculty or staff member to a Sakai site (Site Info > Add Participants) add the USERNAME ONLY in the top box for Official Participants. If you use the entire e-mail address, Sakai creates a guest account instead of using the regular account that's already there, so the regular account won't see the website.

I added a NON-W&L person to my Sakai site and that person logs in but doesn't see the site. What is the cause? (link) |
There are two possible causes:
1. Make sure that you have published the site. (Site Info > Manage Access > Publish Site)
2. Add the participant to the site as a NON-OFFICIAL site participant. In the course site, go to Site Info > Add Participants and add the user's full e-mail address in the SECOND box for NON-OFFICIAL participants. Applies To: Faculty |

In Outlook 2007 and domain computers, there is a group policy object in place that prevents caching mode. If a computer is NOT in the domain OR is using Outlook 2010, then that policy does not apply, and by default, cached mode gets turned on.
To turn it off, go to File, Account Settings, Account Settings. Select her name, hit change. “Use cached exchange mode” should be unchecked.

Why do authenticated forms embedded in unauthenticated web pages display a 401 Access Denied error using Firefox 40? (link) |
Version 40 of Firefox intentionally disables authenticated content embedded in unauthenticated web pages if the page and content are in different domains.
This can be manually fixed by:
- typing “about:config” in the address bar
- clicking “I’ll be careful, I promise!”
- searching for the Preference Name: network.auth.allow-subresource-auth
- Click the “1” next to that in the Value column and change to “2”
- click OK.
Once you refresh the page it will prompt for login. |

Inking in PowerPoint 2007's Presenter View to Display Results on the Projector
(Problem: How to stop slides from advancing when inking during a presentation) (link) |
On PowerPoint 2007, Presenter View is an option under the Slide Show menu. Check the "Use Presenter View" box to enable it.
Presenter View expects your computer to be connected to a projector (or external monitor) where the projector is enabled as an extended desktop. This mode doesn't work if the external display mirrors the laptop display. When giving a presentation, the laptop/tablet's screen shows a small window of the slide content, navigation controls, and notes. The external or projected screen shows the full slide without the notes or navigation.
Enabled in PowerPoint 2007 is a button to ink on the current slide and have the results displayed on the external projector. However, when I tried this it kept advancing to the next slide after inking a stroke. I finally figured out how to work around this problem - select all the slides under "Animations", and disable "On Mouse Click" under "Advance Slide." Of course you can no longer click to advance, but that's not relevant when you have the navigation controls of Presenter View. One other hint: I have to click "apply to all slides" after unchecking "advance on mouse click" in order to get it to stop.
Unfortunately, Presenter View doesn't show mouse movements, so I would have to actually highlight the thing I'm referring to or draw a line to it or something.
