Anti-Virus Software (Windows)
To install anti-virus software on your computer you must first uninstall any other antivirus software you might have before installing ours. Then click on the link Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7/Vista/XP and install using Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013 and 2011
Our license agreement with Microsoft provides students with rights to Windows operating system upgrades, Microsoft Office for Windows and MacOS.
- Students are entitled to upgrade to the latest versions until their graduation then you will have a perpetual license(s) for your installed version.
- Students that withdraw from the University without graduating must uninstall the Microsoft products acquired through this license agreement.
To install Office on your computer go to http://wlu.onthehub.com and click the "Sign In" link. If you are prompted, provide your W&L username and password. Click on the product you want and Add to Cart.
- Microsoft downloads are FREE for students.

How to I create a PDF from a Word Document? (link) |
1. Open the Word Document.
2. Click on File in the upper Left hand corner.
3. Click on Save As
4. Choose PDF from the Save as type drop down.
5. Name the file and click save.

If you are getting a pop up window that Symantec is out of date either:
1. Click on the upright Yellow Shield in your task bar.
2. When the Symantec Window pops up click Live Update on the Left.
If you can't find the yellow shield
1. Click on Start > All Programs > Symantec Endpoint Protection
2. Click on Live Update on the Left.
Syamtec will now run Live Update, you can safely ignore both windows until it has finished.

Unfortunately, no. It cannot be pre-installed in the lab environment.
That said, you may certainly use Box Edit. Box Edit will prompt you to install it any time you log into a computer, log in to your Box account, and then attempt to edit a file.

How do I toast a bagel on the office coffee maker? (link) |
First, make sure that each carafe is at least half full. Then cut your bagel in half and wrap each half in a paper towel. Place each half the wrapped bagel face first onto a heating plate on the coffee maker, then place the coffee carafe on top of it. The hotplate will heat the face of the bagel, while the pot heats the top of it. DO NOT LEAVE THE BAGEL UNATTENDED. After two minutes you should test the Bagel for doneness. |

On the left click "Recent Print Jobs" Review your printing If you see charges that you believe are in error on the far right side under status Click request refund and fill in two questions
- Refund Amount - is it Full or Partial?
- Reason for Request - you may have printed two copies, a copy might not have printed OR you printed for an organization on campus
- If you printed for an organization on campus you'll need to provide the name of the organization
- If you printed for an organization on campus you'll need to provide the 6 digit account number to charge
- Click Send

- You can use the Course Distribution Lists that are available in the Global Address List (GAL) in Outlook or Entourage. The courses are listed alphabetically by discipline. The format is Chem 106_01 Spring 2009-10.
- In Sakai, you can use the Announcements tool to send e-mails. Choose High Priority to send e-mail to all participants of the site.
- In Sakai, use the EMail Archive tool. You will have to add the EMail Archive tool in the Site Info > Edit Tools screen.
- In Sakai, use the Mailtool too. You will have to add the Mailtool tool in the Site Info > Edit Tools screen. Note: The Mailtool has been deprecated by the Sakai Foundation. The tool is no longer supported and may not be included in future releases.

What are statistical software packages? (link) |
Statistical software packages are like Excel on steroids.While Excel is a very powerful tool, you wouldn’t use it to compute your income taxes if you had a complicated return. You would use specialized tax software. If you want to perform the types of statistical analysis that can be found in academic journals than software like Stata or SPSS would probably be helpful. Analyses such as crosstabs, correlations, OLS regressions, logistic regressions, etc. can be done in Excel but are easier in Stata or SPSS. Other types of analyses just can’t be done in Excel. Stata and SPSS can also handle much larger data files than Excel.
Stata and SPSS also have excellent data management capabilities that facilitate combining data from different sources.In that sense, they can be thought of as low end database software with extremely strong statistical capabilities. |

If your computer crashes or the Office 2010 application you are using fails click on "File" > "Options" > " Save" and look for the "Auto Recovery file location". Copy that location and paste in into your Run window (Start > Run in XP Start > Search files and folders in Windows 7). You can also browse to this location.
If you do not find your document use Search to search for any file that was created during the timeframe you worked on your document. While you work on a document temporary files are created and by opening these files ( .tmp files) with word or wordpad you may find your document. |

- In your H: drive, create a new folder named "public_html"

How to Set Envelope Font Defaults in Microsoft Office Word 2010 (link) |
Open Word 2010, click on Mailings tab on the Ribbon:
1.Click on Envelopes 2.Click on Options 3.Under Delivery Address, click on Font 4.Choose desired Font, i.e. Calibri, Regular, Size 12 5.Click on Set As Default and select Yes (Do you want to change the default envelope address font to Calibri, 12pt?)
Then, click on Font under Return Address Repeat steps 3 to 5. click on OK, then click on Close. Save the document.
If the default goes back to +Headings. Show hidden files then edit the Normal.dot template in Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot and save.

How do I use Sakai discussion forum to have students post papers and three students leave comments? (link) |
Add the discussion forum tool to the site.
Allow new threads and allow attachments.
Have the students create a thread, post their assignments as attachments and then have three other students post replies to those threads. If a student goes in and sees that a particular paper already has three replies, then she or he needs to look at another paper. I don’t think there’s a way you can enforce this automatically, you just have to tell the students to pay attention.
If you look at the times submitted for the replies, you’ll be able to see who did the first three replies.

ITS expects most computers to last between four and five years. It is our goal to evaluate the functionality of computers when they turn four years old.

Why are some files unavailable in my personal web site? (link) |
If you right click on the files that do not work and look at the Security tab under Properties, the read permissions for the WWW user are missing. This is the account that the web servers use to read the data. Missing rights is usually caused by moving files between folders of differing security settings. Within a volume, the file server does not recalculate rights on a move. These files may have been dragged from elsewhere in the H: drive, and therefore did not receive the read permissions required. The easiest way to prevent this is to use copy/paste instead of drag or move, since rights are always re-calculated when a file is created.
To fix the existing files:
1. right click on the public_html folder
2. select properties
3. select security
4. select advanced
5. check the box “Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects”
6. select OK
7. select OK
This will force all the rights in the public_html folder to be recalculated. |

One of the site owners needs to log into the SharePoint site (Members and Visitors cannot do this.)

Site Actions > Site Permissions

Select the name of the group to which you want to add the person.

Click New in the light gray bar above the list of current group members.

Type in or browse the address book for the username.

By default, the box is checked for the added person to receive an email with a link to the site. You can also add a personal message if you'd like.

Click OK.

How do prospective students access the Generals' HQ Applicant Portal? (link) |
Prospective students access using their personal e-mail address. The one they used when they applied. Prospective students create an account (GHQ Applicant Portal "Account Creation" page) and are then sent a 5 digit pin in an email, incuding a link back to the portal where they create a password. |

Transcripts are requested through the Registrar's Office. Information can be found on this page: http://www.wlu.edu/x33519.xml
If you are a graduate you don't have access to WebAdvisor anymore. Go to the Registrar's Office page (link above) and Click the Transcript Request Form under the Alumni Header. Print and mail or fax in the request. As alum you will receive an official transcript. To make it unofficial you need to make a photocopy of the hard copy.

How can I add addresses to my personal contacts list from the Global Address List (GAL)? (link) |
1. Open the Global Address List (GAL) by clicking the address book button(looks like a little open book)
2. Search the GAL for the user
3. Highlight the user> right click> click 'Add to Contacts'>
4. At this point you can either click 'Save & Close' and then manually move the contact from your default Contacts address book to your custom book OR you can select the Microsoft icon (top left) select 'Move'>'Copy to Folder'>select your custom address book folder>click OK>close the contact window without saving. |

We do not provide copies of the address list for two primary reasons. 1 - it becomes a nightmare to troubleshoot issues as more and more out-of-date address lists are in use, 2 - if a machine holding these addresses gets infected with a virus that uses or collects addresses then our whole address list would be compromised. |
