Why can't I use the "Edit in Browser" feature in SharePoint 2010? (link)

If Check-Out and Check-In are enforced on a document library, the "Edit in Browser" feature will not be available. You'll have to open the file in Word, or Excel, depending on the type of file, in order to edit it.

Why are some of the menu options in SharePoint 2010 grayed out? (link)

Menu options that are grayed out are not available, and there are many possible reasons why. Items in the list might not be selected, the browser you are using might mean that option is not available (Internet Explorer from a PC is the browser that will provide you the most functionality), you might not have permissions in the site, or the site administrator may have disallowed various options.

How do I get a Sharepoint Collaboration site? (link)
There are two ways to get a collaboration site. If you go to https://sharepoint.wlu.edu, you can click on the "Request a Collaboration Site" link. You will be presented with a form that you need to fill out. You should have your site within 24-48 hours.
 
You can also place a request in Web HelpDesk. If you go to webhelpdesk.wlu.edu and sign in, you can create a ticket asking for a site. Please be sure to include the PURPOSE of the site (meeting site for Committee XYZ); the FULL NAME OF THE SITE OWNER (it might be you--the name of the person who will be responsible for maintaining the site); the MEMBERS who will be accessing the site; and finally, what ACCESS RIGHTS those members need (read-only? read, write, add, delete?)

How do I turn off Check In and Check Out on a Document Library in SharePoint 2010? (link)
  • Click on the name of the document library.
  • In the ribbon at the top of the page, choose "Library" under "Library Tools"
  • Select Library Settings (right side of ribbon)
  • Select "Versioning Settings"
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page. Under "Require Check Out", select "No"
  • Click "OK"

How do I clear my browsing history (Browser)? (link)

You can the history of you web surfing for the following browsers in the following ways:

In Chome go to Tools (the little wrench) Choose History, and Select the "Delete history for this day" link next to the day you want to clear the history for. You can also browse in "Incognito" mode. If you are in this mode none of your browsing will be saved in any way. Simply cick on the Tools icon and choose "incognito mode".

In FireFox choose Tools > Options > Privacy > History and choose "Clear Browsing History"

In Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, and in the general tab Look for Browsing History and choose Delete.

 In Safari choose History from the menu bar and then choose Clear History.

How do I add W&L staff, faculty or students to a SharePoint site? (link)
  1. One of the site owners needs to log into the SharePoint site (Members and Visitors cannot do this.)
  2. Site Actions > Site Permissions
  3. Select the name of the group to which you want to add the person.
  4. Click New in the light gray bar above the list of current group members.
  5. Type in or browse the address book for the username.
  6. By default, the box is checked for the added person to receive an email with a link to the site. You can also add a personal message if you'd like.
  7. Click OK.

SharePoint User Receives Multiple Notification/Alerts from a List (link)

There may be multiple user notification/alerts registered for the list.  To delete the extra notifications:

  1. on the SharePoint site as an admin, select "Site Actions"
  2. select "Site Settings"
  3. under "Site Administration" select "User Alerts"
  4. select the user to check for duplicate noifications/alerts and select "Update"
  5. check the duplicate notifications/alerts
  6. select "Delete Selected Alerts"
  7. Re-select user to verify duplicate notifications/alerts are gone

How do I add a SharePoint calendar to Outlook? (link)
  • Click on the name of the SharePoint calendar. 
  • From the Calendar Tools menu, select Calendar Tools.
  • Select Connect to Outlook.
  • A warning message from Microosft Outlook appears: 'Connect this SharePoint Calendar to Outlook? You should only connect lists from sources you know and trust.'
  • Click on Yes.

This option is only available from Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox browsers on a PC.

If you use Chrome on a PC, log into the site using Internet Explorer just long enough to accomplish the desired task.

If you're using a Macintosh, you can use a virtual desktop by going to http://thestable.wlu.edu, selecting an image from the MAIN menu, then logging into the SharePoint site using Internet Explorer.

How do I remove the headers when I print a page from my browser? (link)

In Internet Explorer:

1. Go to File, then Print Preview

2. The fifth icon from the left is "Turn off Headers and Footers" Click it.

3. Print.  The headers and footers should be gone.

 

In Firefox:

1. To to File, then Print Preview

2. Click Page Setup.

3. Click the Margins and Headers/Footers tab.

4. Use the drop down menu to choose how you want the headers or footers to appear, if you want to remove them use the -blank- option.

5. Close and Print.

How do I copy an Outlook 2007 Calendar into SharePoint? (link)
  1. Create the new calendar in sharepoint, and link it to your Outlook
  2. Open the source Outlook calendar (either from exchange or as a PST, however you have it).
  3. Go to folder view and open the source calendar
  4. With the source calendar open, go to view menu, current view, and select all appointments.
  5. Hit CTRL-A to select all the appointments, or just get the ones you want.
  6. Drag-and-drop the selected calendar Items to the linked sharepoint calendar

  • First check out your page in Ingeniux
  • Click Edit
  • Right click in a Cell adjacent to where you want the addition and then drop down to either column or row
  • Your options are to add before or after where your cursor is located
  • If you don't like where you have placed your cell just right click in the emptey cell and delete the row or column

  1. On the File tab, click Options.
  2. In Options click Mail.

How does the AutoComplete feature work in Outlook? (link)
Note: When you type the first letter of a name in one the To, CC, and BCC boxes, AutoComplete begins to suggest possible matches based on names of whom you have sent an item to before.

How AutoComplete Works
The AutoComplete feature is turned on by default, and displays suggestions for names as you type them in the following situations:
  • To, Cc, and Bcc boxes in an e-mail message.
  • To boxes in meeting requests, tasks, and share requests
  • E-mail field in a contact card.

    When you type the first letter of a name in one of these boxes, AutoComplete begins to suggest possible matches based on names you have typed before. The more letters you type, the greater the possibility of AutoComplete finding a match.

Click the name you want to enter in the box. If you are using the keyboard, select the name using the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW keys, and then press ENTER (or TAB). If no suggestion matches what you are typing, continue typing. The AutoComplete feature will remember what you typed the next time you type that name.

Names that you use less frequently will move lower in the list over time, and eventually will no longer appear.

How do I share folders in Outlook 2010? (link)

To share an E-mail folder, in the Navigation Pane, click Mail.

 

· Right-click Mailbox - your name, and then click on Properties.

· On the Permissions Tab, click Add.

· Select the person that you want to give permissions to, and then click Add.

· Select the person's name in the list, and then for Permission Level, select Reviewer.

· Click OK.

· Right-click the folder you want to give the other person permissions to view, and then click  Sharing.

· Click Add.

· Select the other person you want to give permissions to, and then under Add Users, click Add

· Select the person's name in the list, and then for Permission Level, select Reviewer.

Note If you want the person to be able to change items, select Editor.

To share a folder that is not directly beneath Mailbox - user name, like the Inbox, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, or Journal folders, you must do the following on each folder that is higher in the folder tree.

· Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing.

· Click Add.

· Select the other user you want to give permissions to, and then under Add Users, click Add.

· Select the user's name in the list, and then for Permission Level, select None.

· The top folder, Mailbox - Your Name, must be shared to share any folder beneath it.

· The Inbox folder must be shared to share any of the folders beneath it, such as the Prospective clients folder. You can set the Inbox folder permissions to None to prevent others from viewing the contents.

· The Prospective clients folder should have at least Reviewer permissions for other people to view the contents.

Sending to a contact group in Outlook 2010 didn't send to all members. Why? (link)

Fix: 

     • When in the Contact Folder open the distribution list so that you can see the members.
     • Click on Update Now in the tool bar
     • Click Save & Close

To check that all members will be sent to, create a new message and place the distribution list in the To field, then expand the distribution list and check that all names are listed.

How Do I Check the Size of my Mailbox Using Outlook 2010? (link)
  • From the File tab, under Info, select Cleanup Tools, then Mailbox Cleanup...
  • Click the View Mailbox Size... button.
  • Select the Server Data tab of the Folder Size window
  • Since 1,000,000 KB = 1 GB, for example if it is displaying 683,462 KB that converts to .68 GB.

    Note:

    Be sure to look at the Server tab, not the Local tab. The size of your folders listed on Local do not count towards your email storage quota, since these files are being stored on your 'local' hard drive.

How do I undelete a contact in Outlook 2010? (link)

If you did in error it should be in your trash and then you just drag and drop it back into contacts.

If some time has passed follow these steps from Microsoft

  1. With Outlook 2010 open click the File Ribbon tab then click the Options button. 
  2. Click Customize Ribbon
  3. On the right-hand side add a New Group under the Folder main tab. You can rename it after it is created.
  4. Change the “Choose commands from:” to All Commands. Scroll down and select the “Recover Deleted Items…” option then click the “Add > >” button to add this option to your newly created custom group OK.
  5. You will now see your new group and the Recover Deleted Items icon in the Folder tab on all folders.
  6. If you were to click the button you will see that you have access to any purged/shift-deleted items from that folder.
  7. If you use the recover option you will see that your item has now been returned.

Why can't I access Facebook on the wireless network? (link)

Various restrictions apply to the guest wireless network, including limited speed, and restricted access to some web sites, including Facebook. W&L faculty, staff and students can get the best quality connection by registering for W&L's secure wireless network. To do that, point your browser on your wireless device to http://wireless.wlu.edu and follow the directions.

Which browser should I use with Outlook Web App (OWA)? (link)

From the Microsoft website:

To use the complete set of features that are available in Outlook Web App (OWA) and the web management interface (also known as the premium version), you can use the following browsers on a computer that runs Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows 7:

  • Internet Explorer 7 and later versions.
  • Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.
  • Chrome 3.0.195.27 and later versions.

On a computer that is running Max OS X, you can use the following browsers:

  • Safari 3.1 and later versions.
  • Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.

On a computer that is running Linux, you can use the following browser:

  • Firefox 3.0.1 and later versions.

If you use a web browser that does not support the full feature set, Outlook Web App opens in the light version.

Is Box Edit already installed in the Innovation Lab? (link)

Unfortunately, no. It cannot be pre-installed in the lab environment.

That said, you may certainly use Box Edit. Box Edit will prompt you to install it any time you log into a computer, log in to your Box account, and then attempt to edit a file.

Why won't BART recognise a SATA disk? (link)

Instruction:
1. Go to BIOS setting, On Board Devices, and turn off "Flash Cache Module".
2. Go to On Board Devices and change SATA Operation from "AHCI" to "ATA"
3. Save and exit BIOS
4. Use your BartPE to access the "Vista HDD" now, you will be able to see a C: Drive, back up all files.
5. If clean Install Vista from CD, change everything back in the BIOS.
 (Is it possible to do a ghost? Haven't tried yet since I couldn't find a working vista image)

How do I edit the information of the members of a distribution list? (link)

You cannot edit the information of members of a distribution list, but there is a workaround:

In Outlook on a PC:

  1. Click on Contacts
  2. Click the New button to create a new Contact
  3. Fill out the Contact information
  4. Click on Save to save the contact
  5. In the File menu, choose File > New > Folder
  6. Name the folder (My Study Abroad Students, for example)
  7. This folder should now appear in the left menu at the very top under "My Contacts"
  8. Now you can click and drag the newly created contact into the folder.
  9. Repeat these steps for all the Contacts you want to add to the folder

How do I create a signature for my e-mail using the Outlook 2010 client? (link)
  1. In Outlook, click on File > Options > Mail.
  2. Click on Signatures.
  3. Click the New button.
  4. Type a name for your signature and click on OK.
  5. In Choose Default Signature:
  6. Select e-mail signature.
  7. Select if you want your signature added to New messages.
  8. Select if you want your signature added to Replies/Forwards.
  9. In Edit Signature, you have serveral options:  Type your signature, insert a picture, insert your business card, or add an hyperlink.
  10. Click on OK to return to your Mail.

How to share a distribution list in Outlook 2010. (link)

1. Open the distribution list (double-click on the list.)

2. Click on Forward Group.

3. Choose As an Outlook Contact.

4. Send the email to the recipient.

For the recipient:

1. Open the email.

2. Click on the email attachment and drag it to the Contacts button on the left side of the Outlook window. Now when you look at your contacts, you should see the distribution list.

How do I activate my Adobe PDF Toolbar in Word 2010? (link)

Office 2010 applications
    Click the File tab, and then click Option.
    Click Add-Ins on the left side of the dialog box.
    Do one of the following:
        If PDFMOutlook or Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-in is not listed, choose COM Add-Ins from the Manage pop-up menu and click Go.
        If PDFMOutlook or Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-in is listed under Disabled Application Add-ins, select Disabled Items from the Manage pop-up menu and click Go.

    Select PDFMOutlook or Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Add-in and click OK.
    Restart the Office application.

When off campus, why can't I log into a W&L application web site (like SharePoint) using Internet Explorer? (link)

If one takes a W&L laptop that is in the W&L AD domain off campus and then attaches to a site that is in the IE 'Local Intranet' security zone, the laptop attempts to do pass-through integrated windows login.  However, this requires that the computer has direct access to an AD domain controller, which is blocked in the firewall.  Unfortunately, IE does not gracefully fall back to a username and password prompt in this case.

 

To configure IE to always prompt for a username and password:

1.       Open Internet Explorer

2.       Select “Tools”

3.       Select “Internet Options”

4.       Select “Security”

5.       Select “Local  intranet”

6.       Select “Custom level…”

7.       Scroll all the way to the last option and select “Prompt for user name and password”

8.       Select “OK” to exit both dialog windows

 

To re-configure IE once you are back on campus, follow the same procedure, but in step 7, select “Automatic logon only in Intranet zone”

I lost the document I was working on. Where should I look for it (Office 2010)? (link)

If your computer crashes or the Office 2010 application you are using fails click on "File" > "Options" > " Save" and look for the "Auto Recovery file location". Copy that location and paste in into your Run window (Start > Run in XP Start > Search files and folders in Windows 7).  You can also browse to this location.

If you do not find your document use Search to search for any file that was created during the timeframe you worked on your document. While you work on a document temporary files are created and by opening these files ( .tmp files) with word or wordpad you may find your document.

How do I use FLASH feature on my phone if I live off campus? (link)

The FLASH function places any call on soft hold so that you can access a feature or dial another party. The soft hold lasts until you hang up or reconnect the call.

If you are not sure whether to FLASH before using a system feature, remember that you must have dial tone before using a feature. So, if you don't have dial tone, FLASH.

As a resident of off-campus housing, you provide your own phone and it is suggested that you use a phone that has a FLASH button since this feature is used to access so many system features. If you do not have a phone with a FLASH button, do the following: Press the switch hook on your phone for one second Listen for a tone followed by the high pitched holding tone

Note: Holding the switch hook down for longer than one second can disconnect your call.

Delete this installation of Citrix

Log back into the Stable and after Citrix client is downloaded close the browser

Install new instance of Citrix client

Reopen browser

Why can't I log on to a W&L authenticated web application? (link)

Here are some of the most common symptoms and solutions to authentication failure to W&L web applications:

  1. You are repeatedly presented with a login prompt, which never is successful.  You are using a personal computer, or are off campus.    Try entering your user name with the prefix "AD\" .  E.g.   AD\MyAccountName  .  W&L's Active Directory domain is named "AD".  This prefix tells the web server which domain to authenticate against.
  2. The previous step does not work, but in the popup, you see an option similar to "Use Another Account".  Select that option, and use the AD\ prefix.  In this case, your browser is using your computer's name as the authentication domain, and is ignoring the AD\ prefix.
  3. Has your W&L password expired?  Has it been more that one year since you changed it?  You may do so at http://password.wlu.edu.
  4. You are using FireFox version 30.0 on a Mac or Linux workstation.  Release 30 breaks Windows authentication.  See the following for a fix: http://managementtools.wlu.edu/Help/Resources/1/271.pdf
  5. You are using FireFox version 40, and accessing an unauthenticated page with authenticated content embedded in it.  This version of FireFox intentionally disables this if the page and content are in different domains.  You can configure Firefox to allow this, or use a different browser.
  6. You are using Safari, and receiving the error "request body stream exhausted".  This is a bug with Safari authentication.  Use a different browser.
  7. You are on an iOS device, recently updated to version 7.  This update breaks windows authentication for some iOS devices like iPhones or iPads.  Use another device.
  8. You are never presented with a login prompt.  You are using Internet Explorer on a W&L computer, from off campus.  Integrated Windows login is failing because the browser can not communicate with a W&L AD Domain Controller from off campus.  Use another browser or temporarily disable Integrated Windows authentication: https://managementtools.wlu.edu/Help/Default.aspx?col=1&q=unable+log+login

If none of these solutions work, try going to http://MyVI.wlu.edu and opening a web browser from the APPS screen.  Then, you will effectively be using a W&L computer, and on campus.  This will bypass many issues associated with using personally owned computers.

You could possibly be missing a CODEC file that did not come with Windows Media Player. Try using another media player like PowerDVD instead.

How do I make my contacts folder an Address Book (Outlook 2010)? (link)

To make a personal contacts folder into an address book that is visible when viewing address books, complete the steps below:

  1. In the Navigation Pane, click Contacts.
  2. Under My Contacts, right-click the Contacts folder you want to view in the address book, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  3. Click the Outlook Address Book tab, and make sure that the Show this folder as an e-mail address book check box is selected. If the check box is unavailable, you need to add the Outlook Address Book to your profile (see instructions below).
  4. Click OK.

Now when you open a new message, click the To button, and open the dropdown list of address books, this address book will be listed.

My Mac won't connect to WLUsec. How do I fix this? (link)

Your are probably having this problem because your Mac is trying to use an old 802.1x setting. To delete these old settings follow these instructions.

  1. Click on your Apple icon, and go to System Preferences.
  2. In system Preferences click on the Network icon.
  3. Choose the AirPort in the left hand window, and click on the Advanced button in the lower right hand side of the Network window.
  4. In the Advanced window click on the 802.1X tab. At this point you will need to delete the existing user profiles. Click on any that exist in the left hand screen and click on the - (minus) sign beneith them.
  5. Click OK, and connect to WLU and rerun the the Cloudpath installer.

Why can't I delete .jar files that I saved to my home folder (H Drive)? (link)
 
 

.jar files are archive files which get marked read-only sometimes when they're created (depending on the program or method used to create them).

Just right-click on the file and remove the Read-only check. Then you should be able to delete them!

How to Set Envelope Font Defaults in Microsoft Office Word 2010 (link)

Open Word 2010, click on Mailings tab on the Ribbon:

1.Click on Envelopes
2.Click on Options
3.Under Delivery Address, click on Font
4.Choose desired Font, i.e. Calibri, Regular, Size 12
5.Click on Set As Default and select Yes (Do you want to change the default envelope address font to Calibri, 12pt?)

Then, click on Font under Return Address
Repeat steps 3 to 5.
click on OK, then click on Close.
Save the document.

If the default goes back to +Headings.
Show hidden files then edit the Normal.dot template in
Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\normal.dot and save.

I added a NON-W&L person to my Sakai site and that person logs in but doesn't see the site. What is the cause? (link)

There are two possible causes:

1. Make sure that you have published the site. (Site Info > Manage Access > Publish Site)

2. Add the participant to the site as a NON-OFFICIAL site participant. In the course site, go to Site Info > Add Participants and add the user's full e-mail address in the SECOND box for NON-OFFICIAL participants.

How do I add a QuickTime video (.mov, .mp4) to my Power Point 2010 presentation? (link)

With PowerPoint 2010, when you have the QuickTime player installed on your computer, you can insert an Apple QuickTime movie (.mov, .mp4) file.

The PowerPoint 2010 64-bit version is not compatible with 32-bit versions of QuickTime or Flash. You must install a 64-bit version of QuickTime or Flash, or a 32-bit version of PowerPoint 2010.

Why won't Box sync work on my Mac running 10.6.8? (link)

Box will not run on Mac 10.6.8. Apple dropped support of Mac 10.6.8 in February 2014, and since it's not being updated with security updates, Box has dropped their support of the operating system.
